Getting Mentally Ready to Sell Your Home

Emotion vs. Reason

Selling your home is an emotion-laden situation. Most of us are attached to our homes; many us have raised our children there and have memories connected with each room in the home.

It is important for you to detach "you" from the "house". Your goal is to think of your home as a marketable commodity. It is Property. It is Real Estate. It is something you want to sell. If you don't consciously do this, you may inadvertently create a situation where it takes longer to sell your home.

De-personalizing the House

The first thing in getting your home ready to sell is to "de-personalize it". This will help put you in the proper frame of mind and help put your home in the right condition to market it.

De-personalizing your house allows your potential buyers to visualize it as their home. When a homebuyer sees your family photos on the wall, it momentarily shatters the illusion that this could be their home.

So put away many of your family photos, sports trophies, collectibles and souvenirs. You may need to rent a storage area for a while and store these and other items in the unit. One of the main things of preparing a house for sales is to remove "clutter".
