California is located in the western United States, bordering the Pacific Ocean. It is the most populous state and is the third largest in area. The official nickname is "The Golden State."

The name comes from Las sergas de Espladián (Adventures of Spladian), a 16th century novel, by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, where there is an island paradise called California.

California's 2000 population was 33.8 million. The Southern California area is highly populated. Larger Northern California is less densely populated. Sacramento is the capital. Los Angeles is the largest city. Other major population centers are San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, the Inland Empire (Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario), Sacramento, Bakersfield, Fresno and the Antelope Valley (Palmdale-Lancaster).
